New Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards resources launched

Care services improvement charity the Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) has launched new elearning resources and a briefing on the Mental Capacity Act (MCA) and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS).

This comes after recent news stories involving the MCA, such as the case of Steven Neary – who a judge ruled was unlawfully deprived of his liberty by his local authority – and the Panorama film about Winterbourne View.

SCIE says it is vital that professionals fully understand the implications of the MCA. The elearning resources provide audio, video and interactive technology to explore the sometimes difficult decisions that have to be made about mental capacity. Resources include information specifically for independent mental capacity advocates. Meanwhile, the briefing is a simple guide to the DoLS. Under the MCA restraint and restrictions can be used but only if these are in the best interests of a person lacking capacity to make decisions about these things themselves.
