What changes to NICE/SIGN guidance would you like to see?

  • Better roll out of mandatory training, for example, Oliver McGowan Training
  • Ensure that proper consideration is given to support needs at the point of discharge from the hospital to reduce the number of unsafe discharges. Currently, safe discharge processes seem to focus on older people only
  • Review of DNAR policies
  • Advocate/champion the red bag scheme for people entering hospital
  • Ensure that there are learning disability nurses in every hospital
  • Ensure EARLY access to a learning disability nurse where one is available
  • Better understanding of the Mental Capacity Act
  • Greater transparency/candour when something goes wrong, so there is proper learning that tangibly prevents similar situations from occurring.

Do you have any other ideas or innovative solutions to help prevent preventable deaths?

Better Health Access with the Choice Support initiative, which focuses on empowering individuals with learning disabilities and autism to make informed decisions about their care and support needs.
