Tell your GP about your learning disability for extra support, says charity campaign

Only 23% of people living with a learning disability have told their GP about it, say Mencap and NHS England.

Don’t Miss Out is a new campaign from Mencap and NHS England designed to encourage people to tell their GP about their leaning disability in order to access extra help.

They say that people with learning disabilities can benefit from extra time for appointments, easy to read information and annual health checks.

Rachel Ashcroft, Strategic Development Manager for Health at learning disability charity Mencap, said: “Visiting the GP can be incredibly difficult if you have a learning disability. Being on the GP’s learning disability register can ensure healthcare is much more accessible and can result in better health outcomes for people with a learning disability.

“Access to better support, more time and annual health checks could play a crucial role in improving patient-doctor relationships and ensuring that people with a learning disability receive the healthcare and treatment they need.”
