Radio 1 DJ Jameela Jamil sets up first members club for people with disabilities

Why not Jameela Jamil 180The UK’s first social enterprise staging fully inclusive and accessible events for its disabled members and their friends has been set up with the support of Radio 1 DJ Jameela Jamil.

Why Not People? is a members club established exclusively for people with disabilities including those in a wheelchair, with a sensory impairment or having learning disabilities. Its launch in July event will include Tinie Tempah on the bill.

Since its launch, Why Not People? has received support from musicians such as Coldplay, Calvin Harris, Sam Smith and Ed Sheeran; Paralympic athletes Ade Adepitan and Hannah Russell, and TV personalities Alex Brooker and Martin Dougan.

“It’s an amazing thing to have some of the finest talent on the planet supporting our cause and we’re so thrilled to announce our launch event with Tinie Tempah on the 1st July at the Troxy in London,” said Jamil, founder of Why Not People? “Our members and their mates can expect a night and experience unparalleled to any other. No one will be separated from their mates, everyone will be right in the action. This is just the first of many…”

The club will also curate areas within other promoters’ events, catering for those with physical and sensory impairments as well as offering discount tickets to members.

Technologies such as the SubPac will also enhance the experience had by people with hearing impairments. SubPac is a patent-pending tactile audio technology – it transfers low frequencies directly to your body and provides you with a new physical dimension to the music experience.

Director of Why Not People?, Scope patron and TV presenter, Sophie Morgan, added: “Why Not People? is smashing the stereotype, battering down the barriers and re-writing the rules to make sure that disabled people’s lives are made better. We are more than just an events company, members club and pretty face! We really want to start to prove the value of the disabled consumer like never before”

Why Not People? events are designed to help bring significant change in society for the 11.8 million people living with disability in the UK – helping to solve the issues often faced when booking and attending live events. Stage setup and venue layout will be tailored to various different needs, aiming to cater for all disabilities.
