Jan Tregelles named as new Mencap chief executive

Mencap has announced that Jan Tregelles, its current director of personal support, is to become the learning disability charity’s new chief executive.

Tregelles has been acting chief executive since the departure of Mark Goldring to Oxfam earlier in the year.

She first joined Mencap in 1983 as PA to one of the then directors. After leaving the charity to work in housing, she re-joined Mencap in 1997 to set up its housing arm, Golden Lane Housing.

Since 1997 Tregelles has held various posts across Mencap, including director of personal support since 2002. In that time she has grown the business from £80 million turnover to £180 million.

“Mencap has given me some incredible opportunities over the years and has encouraged me to take on increasing responsibility,” said Tregelles. “My entire career has been spent working alongside people with a learning disability and their families. It is a privilege to be taking on the role of CEO of Mencap at this time.

“Over the coming months I will work with my colleagues to deliver a new strategy focusing on delivering more support to families as well as continuing to provide care and support for thousands of people with a learning disability to live full lives.”
