The Great Britain team is celebrating a golden time in Athens at the Special Olympics, after winning 187 medals, including 72 golds.
Over nine days of competition, the GB team won medals in a range of sports despite battling intense heat, exhaustion, a debilitating stomach flu, injuries and the current political instability in Greece. In addition to the 72 golds, the team won 63 silver medals and 52 bronze. Standout track and field performances for the GB team included a 100m and 200m sprint gold medal double for Richard Murphy from Redditch, and Owen Miller, who also scooped two golds in the 800m and 1,500m.
Elsewhere, the ten pin bowling squad took gold – despite a flu bug affecting each member of the team at one point during the games. Great Britain also had success in the pool, taking 4 gold medals, 10 silvers and 6 bronze medals.
“We’ve really come up against it since we arrived in Athens but we’ve pulled together superbly and we can fly back to Great Britain on Tuesday with our heads held high and straining under the weight of so many medals!” said GB’s head of delegation Gordon McCormack.
