Hundreds of representatives from theatreland came together recently at the ‘Autism and theatre: an industry inspiration day’ to discuss and learn about autism. The conference also sought to identify ways to help families, theatres and performers help to make live performances more accessible for people with autism.
The event was organised by independent theatre operator The Ambassador Theatre Group (ATG), in partnership with The National Autistic Society (NAS) and other organisations, and held at the Unicorn Theatre in London.
Actress and NAS president Jane Asher was a keynote speaker at the event. She said: “Making adjustments and training staff can make a huge difference and it was great to see my industry come together. I hope it will lead to more theatres across the UK engaging with local people affected by autism and make the magic of live performance available to as wide a range of children and adults as possible.”
Guest speakers also included NAS CEO Mark Lever, ATG’s joint chief executive Rosemary Squire OBE and chair of Action for Children’s Arts David Wood OBE.
