Communication is key to improving lives

The Can You Understand It! (CYUI!) Team is an editorial group that aims to ensure everything written down is more accessible to people with learning disabilities. It serves the Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust in London.

We meet once a month and we review leaflets, booklets and video clips that are aimed at people with learning disabilities. The team consists of seven ‘Experts by Experience’ – each of whom hold honorary contracts – an information lead and a nurse.

Workshop welcome

At the Learning Disability Study Day in London on May 15 the CYUI? Team will be running a workshop with five team members. The main aim of this workshop is to get participants to think about simplifying language and looking at someone’s communication needs to ensure that communication is a two way process.

We will start by highlighting the reasons why communication needs should be addressed and what the law says. Then participants will be invited to take part in some interactive work around ‘easy read’. There will be a short role-play focusing on communication barriers and participants will have opportunities to feedback on the performance.

The workshop will all involve the CYUI? Team sharing some of their achievements in the Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust and showing some examples of the work they have produced. There will be opportunities to ask questions. We look forward to seeing you on the 15th May!
