Winterbourne View accused given bail

Ten people, charged in connection with ill treatment and neglect of residents at the former Winterbourne View residential hospital, have been released on bail. The defendants, who face 40 charges, involving four patients, under the Mental Capacity Act, appeared before North Avon magistrates today. No pleas were entered. They are due to appear before Bristol Crown Court in February.

The alleged abuse came to light after secret filming for BBC Panorama was broadcast on May 31. Meanwhile, three other men who also worked at Winterbourne View, who were arrested on suspicion of causing ill treatment under the Mental Capacity Act, remain on police bail, pending further inquiries. Winterbourne View was closed in June and the residents were found alternative accommodation.
