The rise in children attending special schools rather than mainstream schools is among the issues the United Nations (UN) has looked at this week as it completes its review of the UK’s record on disability rights.
Evidence has been shared in Geneva, Switzerland, on a range of concerns that include the poor supply of accessible housing as well as inequities in education.
The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) have told Learning Disability Today they expect recommendations will follow from the UN as soon as September.
The same UN Committee last year judged that changes to social security had led to ‘grave and systematic violations’ of disabled people’s rights in the UK.
The UK – unlike countries including the United States of America – is signed up to the UN’s ‘convention on the rights of persons with disabilities‘ and is being assessed against the principles contained within the agreement.
