Sussex Health Care (SHC) has closed six care homes following a series of damning reports by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).
The care group, which is reportedly under police investigation over the deaths of four residents, closed the homes ahead of schedule on the 30 September 2021.
The closures affected six learning disability services and a total of 80 residents, including: Beech Lodge, Horsham; Orchard Lodge, Horsham; Kingsmead Lodge, Horsham; Beechcroft Care Centre, East Grinstead; Wisteria Lodge, Uckfield; and the part closure of The Granary, Broadbridge Heath.
Beech Lodge, a care home for people with learning disabilities, physical disabilities and a range of neurological conditions, was rated “inadequate” in June for the second time by the CQC.
The inspectors found that residents were not protected from abuse or neglect and saw examples of care and support that “were not respectful” and did not promote independence. One relative told the CQC that they were worried about their loved one and kept visiting to check on them.
An SHC spokesperson said that “all residents” have been transferred to new placements within the agreed timeframe and “most staff had the option of transferring to other services within the company” however, some decided to “pursue other avenues.”
They added: “This has been a challenging time for all involved and we wish to thank everyone who has worked so hard to ensure that these transfers happened in as seamless way as was possible. We wish all the people we supported and their families well as they settle into their new homes.”
