Surge in calls for support services expected

iPhone showing one new WhatsApp notificationLearning disability charity Mencap is expecting a surge in calls and enquiries from people looking for support services in 2012. Last year, Mencap Direct, the charity’s national telephone service, received a 100% increase in calls in January and Mencap is expecting an even busier start to 2012.

Mencap Direct enables individuals wishing to set themselves new goals, such as learning skills or taking up a new pastime or hobby, to speak to an adviser to discuss their needs in more detail and help them set plans and find the support that’s right for them. The expected surge in calls comes amid the launch of the charity’s ‘New year, new me’ campaign, which is designed to challenge and inspire people with a learning disability to set themselves personal goals that can make a positive difference to their life. The campaign is being supported by Britain’s Got Talent winner, Jai McDowall, a former learning disability support worker, who is taking part in the London marathon for Mencap as part of his own New Year challenge.

“Making personal goals are a great way to make lasting change to your life and can help others as well,” McDowall said. “This is why I’m pleased to support Mencap’s ‘New year, new me’ campaign to help people with a learning disability make positive changes to their life.” If you want to speak to someone about your New Year goals, or to find out more about the campaign, click here.
