Connor Sparrowhawk’s mother becomes campaign patron

Dr Sarah Ryan has been made patron of disability campaign group My Life My Choice.

Dr Ryan became a well known champion of disability rights after her 18-year-old son Connor, who had epilepsy, autism and a learning disability, drowned in a bath at Slade House in Headington in 2013.

The Oxford University researcher, who specialises in learning disability research, accepted the figurehead position at the invitation of the Oxford-based charity’s trustees.

“My Life My Choice does great work around improving the lives of people with learning disabilities,” said Dr Ryan.

“You talk the talk and walk the walk, and I’d love to support you doing that. I’ll do whatever you want.”

My Life My Choice supported the Justice for LB campaign during inquiries into the death of Connor, also known as ‘Laughing Boy’ or ‘LB’

A series of investigations concluded there had been failings in Connor’s care and Slade House shut permanently.

The group campaigns for better civil rights for those with disabilities and also organises a host of social events.

Dr Ryan’s new role will further raise the profile of the charity’s campaigning work.
