The founder of a youth organisation supporting Syrian refugees and other minority groups was among the winners at Scotland’s first national Learning Disability Awards.
At the ceremony at the Grand Central Hotel in Glasgow, prizes in seven categories were handed out to recognise talent, achievement, and accomplishments.
Among the winners was 26-year-old Kirsty Allan from Lanarkshire, who was nominated after establishing a youth group that supports minority groups, including Syrian refugees.
She said: “I felt excited when my name was called out as the award winner. I really enjoy helping other people.”
“The Learning Disability Awards represent a shift towards recognising the achievements of people who rarely have a platform,” said organiser Lisa Clark.
“All of our finalists are immensely talented at what they do. Whether that’s breaking records in sport, campaigning for change at a national level, or challenging perceptions of what people with learning disabilities can achieve at work or in our communities, the drive and passion they show is clear to see.”
“We hope that the awards provide a springboard to new opportunities for our finalists. They deserve it.”
