People with learning disabilities who use a wheelchair had the opportunity to ‘pimp my chair’ – as well as try out a host of other activities at a supportive therapies day held recently.
‘Pimp my chair’ – inspired by the TV show Pimp My Ride, where people’s old cars are kitted out with outlandish modifications – was the most popular activity at CMG’s Supportive Therapies Day, which also showcased a range of ways to complement programmes of care for people living with multiple learning disabilities.
With ‘Pimp my chair’ service users could customise their wheelchairs. A mermaid, pirates and even a Spice Girls themed chair were entered, with Carl Johnson’s – from CMG’s The Ridgeway service in Essex – medieval knight modifications proving particularly popular. “I loved dressing up and had a really good day,” he said.
The annual day brought staff and the individuals they support together to learn about different techniques which can improve communication, social interaction and general wellbeing. Reflexology, dance and music therapy, as well as art classes, trained therapy dogs and a hydrotherapy pool were all used to illustrate that going the extra mile in care can make a huge difference.
Staff from across the organisation also shared ideas and considered how they can supplement the care they offer.
Katie Reid, healthcare facilitator at CMG said: “The individuals we support always love taking part in the Day. They really respond well to the different activities on offer and benefit enormously from meeting other people from CMG services around the country and getting the chance to try a wide range of different therapies.
“It also gives staff the chance to meet, share ideas and best practice on additional therapies they can provide at CMG services.”
