About 150 people with learning disabilities from across the country came together recently in Croydon at a specially-organised event to mark Black History Month.
The day, organised by learning disability services provider CMG, included musical master-classes from a Zulu dance group and an African drumming workshop, as well as a variety of foods to try from countries like Nigeria and Jamaica, such as yam porridge and curried goat.
It is the fourth time CMG has hosted the event and this year’s theme was ‘Influential People’. A presentation ran throughout the day featuring quotes from inspirational people throughout black history – from the likes of Martin Luther King to modern day icons such as singer Beyoncé.
Additionally, talent shows were run on the day. Sam Marshall took home 1st prize in the singing and Karen Young won the dancing competition with their black history-inspired routines. Junior Cole scooped the top award in the fashion show.
Peter Kinsey, chief executive of CMG, said: “It was the fourth year we have held our Black History Month event, and this was the best yet. I am extremely proud of everyone from CMG who helped make it such a brilliant day.
“As an organisation, we are wholly committed to promoting diversity. This event gives the people we support the opportunity to learn about different cultures in a fun and engaging way.”
The Worshipful the Mayor of Croydon, Councillor Manju Shahul-Hameed, who attended the event, added: “I was delighted to be asked to come along and say a few words. So much work had gone into organising the event and it was a wonderful day.
“It is fantastic to see different communities coming together to celebrate diversity.”
