Special showings of National Theatre Live’s adaptation of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time have been added to the regular monthly Autism Friendly Film screenings for June.
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time will be shown at Vue and Showcase. The production, based on the mystery novel by Mark Haddon and adapted by Simon Stephens and directed by Marianne Elliott, will be the first ever Autism Friendly Event Cinema screening. It tells the story of 15-year-old Christopher John Francis Boone, who has Asperger’s Syndrome. He discovers the slain body of his neighbour’s poodle, Wellington, on the neighbour’s front lawn one evening and sets out to uncover the murderer.
The screening will allow cinema goers who benefit from the subtle alterations made to the sensory-friendly cinema experience, to watch the powerfully moving production with friends and family in an inclusive surrounding. Please note that it is a 15 certificate, so not appropriate for younger children.

Vue will show The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time on Tuesday, June 3 at 7pm, while Showcase’s screening will be on Sunday, June 8 at 10am.
Film screenings
There are the usual film screenings happening in June too. On Sunday, June 1, Cineworld will show Maleficent at 11am. ODEON will show Postman Pat: The Movie on Sunday, June 8 at 11.30am, and finally Vue will screen Tarzan on Sunday, June 29 at 10am.
Disney’s fantasy adventure film Maleficent tells the story of fairy who helped defend a peaceful forest kingdom from an invading army, until she was ruthlessly betrayed – an act that turned her heart to stone. Seeking revenge, Maleficent battles the invading king’s successor and curses his newborn daughter Aurora. But as the girl gets older, Maleficent realises that Aurora is the one who holds the key to making the kingdom peaceful again – and perhaps to Maleficent’s happiness too.
Meanwhile, Postman Pat: The Movie sees the beloved TV character make the jump to the big screen. In the film, the veteran postie auditions for a TV talent show, which takes him away from Greendale. Robots are used to fill his place – but they are not what they seem and Pat will have to stop them.
Finally, in Tarzan the eponymous hero, along with Jane Porter, face a mercenary army dispatched by the evil CEO of Greystoke Energies, who took over the company from Tarzan’s parents after they died in a plane crash.
Sensory friendly environment
Autism Friendly Screenings are mainstream films shown in a sensory friendly environment. Lights are on low, sound is turned down, trailers are omitted and people can bring their own food, make noise and move around the cinema as they feel comfortable.
