Family films Moomins on the Riviera, Minions and Tomorrowland are among the Autism Friendly Films that can be seen in June.
Cineworld cinemas will show Moomins on the Riviera on Sunday, June 7 at 11am. The following Sunday, Showcase will play Disney’s Tomorrowland, starting at 10 am.
On Sunday, June 28, ODEON cinemas will show Minions at 11.30am, while Vue cinemas will play The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge out of Water at 10am for just £1.99.
The following day, ODEON will continue its trial screening for older audiences at 10 selected cinemas by playing Jurassic World (12) at 6pm.
Moomins on the Riviera is a traditionally hand-drawn animated big screen adaptation of the much-loved books and cartoon series. Here, the Moomins along with Little My and Snorkmaiden go on holiday to the glamorous coastline. Before long, the family is divided: dazzled by the extravagance and deciding to join in, Moominpappa pretends to be an aristocrat and Snorkmaiden falls for a dashing playboy. Meanwhile, Moomin and Moominmamma move to the beach to get away from it all. Can they be brought back together?
Meanwhile, the loveable yellow henchmen from the Despicable Me films get their own movie in Minions. From the dawn of time the Minions have served the most despicable of masters, although they are terrible at keeping them. Without a master to serve, they fall into depression. But one Minion, Kevin, has a plan, and he, alongside rebel Stuart and lovable little Bob, venture out into the world to find a new evil boss for his brethren to follow. The trio’s journey leads them to their next potential master, Scarlet Overkill, the world’s first-ever female super-villain. They travel from Antarctica to 1960s New York City, ending in London, where they must face their biggest challenge to date: saving all of Minionkind from annihilation.
In Tomorrowland, a bright, optimistic teen bursting with scientific curiosity and an inventor jaded by disillusionment embark on a danger-filled mission to unearth the secrets of an enigmatic place somewhere in time and space that exists in their collective memory as ‘Tomorrowland.’
For older views, Jurassic World is a re-boot of the 90s franchise. Set 22 years after the events of Jurassic Park, Isla Nublar now features a fully-functioning dinosaur theme park, Jurassic World. After 10 years of operation and visitor rates declining, in order to fulfill a corporate mandate, a new attraction is created to re-spark visitor’s interest, but it backfires horribly.
Finally, in The SpongeBob Movie: A Sponge out of Water, cartoon favourite SpongeBob Squarepants makes the leap into CGI and live action. In the film, SpongeBob, along with friends Patrick, Squidward, Mr Krabs and Sandy – as well as old adversary Plankton – are forced to come ashore when a pirate named Burger Beard steals the top-secret recipe for Krabby Patties. Can the friends get the recipe back before Burger Beard gets to enact his plans?
Sensory friendly environment
Autism Friendly Screenings are mainstream films shown in a sensory friendly environment. Lights are on low, sound is turned down, trailers are omitted and people can bring their own food, make noise and move around the cinema as they feel comfortable.
