Manchester Airport launches Changing Places facilities

Changing Places Manc Airport Manchester Airport has invested £235,000 to open new Changing Places facilities in each of its three terminals.

The facilities have been designed to meet the needs of passengers who have profound and multiple learning disabilities and others with severe disabilities who need the support of at least one carer, providing them with a safe and easy toilet facility to use when travelling through the airport.

Tricia Williams, Manchester Airport’s customer services director, said: “As part of our commitment to improving the passenger experience at the airport, we continually look at the facilities we provide to ensure they meet the needs of our passengers.

“From the moment Tony [Clough, Changing Places campaigner] first approached us, we were proud to be able to support his campaign as he works tirelessly to raise awareness of Changing Places facilities on behalf of his sister, who greatly benefits from these. We really admire and respect the work he does and as an airport that caters for 22 million passengers, it is essential that we work closely to provide a first class facility for all of them.”

Clos-o-Mat provided the equipment for the Changing Places toilets, which include features such as a height-adjustable changing bench, an overhead track hoist; a peninsular toilet, privacy screens and increased space for up to 2 carers.

Kelvin Grimes, Clos-o-Mat Changing Places project manager, commented: “Manchester Airport has just been voted the UK’s top airport, in part due to its accessibility. One in 5 of us are now registered disabled, so toilet facilities such as Changing Places enable as many people as possible to enjoy the things most of us take for granted.”

The Changing Places facilities can be found airside in each of Manchester Airport’s three terminals and can be used by any passenger, adult or child who requires it. Terminal Two and Three Changing Places are now open, with Terminal One Changing Places set to open in March.

Access will be provided via the telephone next to each facility and is controlled by the Customer Contact Centre. To pre-notify the airport of a requirement to use the facilities, passengers or carers can contact the team on 0330 333 0304. For more information, visit: www.manchesterairport.co.uk.
