A new guide to sports and activities for people with learning disabilities in Bromley has been launched. ‘Choosing Activity’, launched by charitable services provider Avenues Trust Group, is an interactive sports and active lifestyle guide. It aims to educate, engage and encourage the people Avenues supports to lead a healthy lifestyle. In addition, it includes a leisure directory for everyone with a disability living in the Bromley area.
The content of the guide has been put together by professionals who support people with a learning disability and translated into easy read by members of Bromley Sparks self-advocacy project, a local user-led charity supported by Advocacy For All. It will also double up as a guide for carers and support staff who can then talk to people with disabilities to help them take part in the activities they want to get involved in. The guide is being distributed to venues regularly accessed by people with a learning disability including clubs, libraries and day services. It will also be sent to people who The London Borough of Bromley and Avenues consider would get the most benefit from it.
Martin Chittell, Avenues’ sport and active lifestyles coordinator said: “The guide will help us to educate and encourage people with learning disabilities to make informed decisions about sport, leisure and health. All too often, people with learning disabilities experience barriers to sport and leisure. We hope this project will address that issue and show them all the activities that are out there for them.”
