Disney Pixar film Inside Out leads the Autism Friendly Films line-up for August, which also includes Pixels, Two by Two and The Fantastic Four.
Inside Out will be shown at selected Cineworld cinemas on Sunday, August 2 at 11am, and at Showcase cinemas the following Sunday, starting at 10am.
Meanwhile, selected ODEON cinemas will show Pixels on Sunday, August 16 at 11:30am. On the following day, for older viewers, 10 selected ODEON cinemas will show The Fantastic Four (12A) at 6pm.
Finally, Two by Two will be played at selected Vue cinemas on Sunday, August 30 at 10am.
In Disney Pixar’s Inside Out, we get to see inside the mind of Riley, a girl who is uprooted from the Midwest of America when her father gets a job in San Francisco. Riley is guided through everyday life by her emotions – Joy, Fear, Disgust, Sadness and Anger – who live in Headquarters, the control centre in Riley’s mind. But as Riley and her emotions struggle to adjust to their new life, turmoil ensues. Although Joy, Riley’s main and most important emotion, tries to keep things positive, the emotions conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house and school.
Meanwhile, in Pixels, chaos ensues when aliens misinterpret video feeds of classic arcade games as a declaration of war, so they attack the Earth in the form of the video games, including Pac-Man and Donkey Kong. Will it be game over for Earth? Not if the US president, along with his childhood friends and video game players have anything to do with it.
Two by Two is a retelling of the classic Noah’s Ark story. Here, two Nestrians – brightly-coloured creatures who can make comfortable nests – called Dave and his son, Finny, aren’t included on the list to join the ark. So they sneak on board with the involuntary help of Hazel and her daughter Leah, two Grymps. But then the children fall off the ark, leaving them to struggle to survive the flood and hungry predators and attempt to reach the top of a mountain, while Dave and Hazel must put aside their differences, turn the ark around and save their kids.
For older viewers, there is the reboot of Marvel’s The Fantastic Four. Going back to the beginning of their story, four young outsiders teleport to an alternate universe, which alters their physical form in shocking ways. Their lives changed forever, the team must learn to harness their new powers and work together to save Earth.
Sensory friendly environment
Autism Friendly Screenings are mainstream films shown in a sensory friendly environment. Lights are on low, sound is turned down, trailers are omitted and people can bring their own food, make noise and move around the cinema as they feel comfortable.
