Punk band Heavy Load, whose members include people with and without learning disabilities, have split after playing a farewell gig at the BT Live site in Trafalgar Square as part of the Paralympics celebrations.
The band decided to call time after drummer Michael White said he wanted to take a break from being in a band, according to a statement on the band’s website, www.heavyload.org
“We always said that we’d split up due to ‘musical similarities’ but in the end we’ve decided it’s best to go out while we’re still having fun,” the statement continued.
The band also thanked their fans for their support.
Heavy Load achieved much in their time together, including starring in a movie, playing gigs across the world, appearing at 2 Glastonbury Festivals, making a Channel 4 theme tune and recording 3 albums.
The band also started the charity Stay Up Late, which promotes the rights of people with learning disabilities to live the lifestyle of their choosing, including going out in the evening to gigs and clubs, with support. Stay Up Late’s work will continue unaffected.
But the split may not be the end of Heavy Load: “Who knows one day we may just do that most rock ‘n roll of things – the big come back!” the statement added jokingly.
