The Giant’s Causeway, Northern Ireland’s only UNESCO Word Heritage site, has become fully accessible to all by installing a Changing Places toilet.
The toilet was part of the Causeway’s new state-of-the-art visitor centre. The site has also opened new trails and pathways suitable for people with a disability.Changing Places toilets are different to standard disabled toilets, which do not meet the needs of all people with a disability, including those with profound and multiple learning disabilities. They have extra features – including a height adjustable, adult-sized changing bench and hoist – and more space for the disabled person and up to two carers.
The Giant’s Causeway visitor centre, on the North Antrim coast, is the ninth venue in Northern Ireland to install a Changing Places toilet. Others include Belfast’s George Best City Airport, the Northern Ireland Assembly at Parliament Buildings and the Orchard Leisure Centre in Armagh.
There are now 425 fully accessible toilets across the UK. Recently, Changing Places facilities have been opened at Kew Gardens in London, Swansea railway station, Stafford Hospital and Harrogate library.
