British Special Olympics team wins record medal haul

The Special Olympics Great Britain team has won a record 13 medals – including 6 golds – at the World Winter Games in South Korea.

The team, which comprised 7 skiers, also won 4 silver and 3 bronze medals at the Games, held in PyeongChang from January 26 – February 6. More than 100 nations participated in the event, with 2,800 athletes with intellectual disabilities taking part.

The individual skier results were:
• Elizabeth Allen from Llanelli won 2 gold and 1 silver medal
• Jane Andrews from Tunbridge Wells won 2 gold medals
• Robert Holden from Rossendale won 1 gold and 2 silver medals
• Clare Lines from Redditch won 2 bronze medals
• Wayne McCarthy from Biggin Hill took home 1 gold and 1 silver medal
• Luke Purdie from Aberdeen won 4th, 7th and 8th place ribbons
• Mikael Undrom from Cobham won 1 bronze medal.

These 7 competitors were chosen from 73 skiers with learning disabilities who qualified at Special Olympics GB’s National Alpine Ski Championships in Pila, Italy, last year.
