Mayo House, a service providing care and accommodation for people with complex behavioural support needs, has been rated ‘outstanding’ by Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspectors.
Social care provider Milestones Trust runs the service, which is based in Yate, north of Bristol. Mayo House provides 7 self-contained flats for people with learning disabilities and complex needs who require individual support.
The CQC’s report, based on findings from an unannounced inspection made in August 2016, said that the service was “exceptionally responsive to people’s needs”, “effective” and “exceptionally well-led”, with the registered manager, Cherie Smith, and senior staff showing “good leadership and management”.
Inspectors said they were struck by the “calm atmosphere” at Mayo House and praised “the caring and skilled approach of staff”. They added that staff treated people with dignity and respect and used innovative and individual ways of involving people so they felt consulted, empowered, listened to and valued.
Jeff Parry, assistant operational director at Milestones Trust, said: “The people supported at Mayo House have in many cases been marginalised by society, but through our service have been able to pursue their hopes and dreams, even if they sometimes find it difficult to articulate those dreams.
“From finding paid employment to maintaining links with family around the world, and from becoming involved in their local community to enjoying their favourite hobbies and pastimes, our work is all about helping the people we care for live their lives to the full.
“We are thrilled to have been recognised with an ‘outstanding’ rating from the CQC. Supporting people with complex needs requires an individualised approach and means our team needs to work closely together to achieve this. It is thanks to the dedication, drive and passion of the staff at Mayo House – as well as their fantastic team spirit – that the quality of care provided through this service is so high.”

“We were delighted to see how the service offered and fully supported a wide range of individualised activities based on people’s hobbies and interests which helped people to live full and meaningful lives.
“It was encouraging to see how staff clearly understood the values and culture of the service and demonstrated this in their care for people. The management were passionate in delivering high-quality person centred care, and this filtered through to every aspect of the home.
“The team should be extremely proud of the work they do. I congratulate the staff at Mayo House for achieving our highest rating.”
