Athletes with learning disabilities inspired by Paralympian

People with learning disabilities were able to compete against each other in the annual CMG National Athletics Championships this week – as well as the opportunity to meet a Paralympic medallist.

The event, at Sutton Arena, drew competitors from across England and Wales together to compete in a range of events, including tug o’ war, sumo wrestling, high jump, long jump, javelin, and track events. Winners received their medals from Daniel West, who won a silver medal in the discus at the 2004 Paralymic Games in Athens, and hopes to compete at London 2012. The event was organised by support provider CMG.

CMG’s Athletics Championship, now an annual event, helps to promote sport as part of a healthy lifestyle for everyone who they support.  West said: “I was honoured to present medals to all of CMG’s budding athletes. I was really struck by how much talent and enthusiasm everyone displayed throughout the day and there was a great atmosphere at the arena. This represents the true spirit of sport, which we will be proud to put on show when the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games come to town next summer.”
