Adult Community Learning Essex (ACLE) will run a free six-week course for adults with learning disabilities on how to use the library next year.
The course forms part of a joint initiative between Essex Library Service and ACLE and will run on Fridays from January 11-February 8, 2013.
ACLE devised the course after a survey of adults with learning disabilities discovered that library equipment did not look accessible to this group of library users.
Councillor Stephen Castle, cabinet member for education and lifelong learning, said: “Being able to use the library can make a real difference to the lives of people with learning disabilities, enabling them to have more independence in the community. If you know someone who may benefit from this course then I’d encourage you to get in touch.”
The course covers an introduction to the library, basic procedures such as joining the library, checking out and returning items and using technology such as self-service equipment, photocopiers and public access computers.
There will be some classroom-based learning, which will take place at Maldon’s Adult Community Learning Centre but the majority of the course will take place in Maldon Library allowing learners to put their newly-acquired skills into practice.
