The new issue of accessible magazine Easy News is out, and articles in it include the results of the EU Referendum and UK local elections and Leicester City winning the Premier League, among other stories.
Easy News, which was launched by United Response in 2013 in a bid to make the news easier to understand for people with learning disabilities, aims to encourage discussion around news stories and keep readers informed by simplifying the complex language that is often used in mainstream news.
The latest issue also covers the Hillsborough inquest, the Egyptian aeroplane crash, the sad death of Jo Cox MP, Sir David Attenborough’s 90th birthday and more.
Easy News is presented in an easy read format, which uses simple words and explanatory images to illustrate the stories. It is produced by UR Consultants, a team of people with learning disabilities or autism.
United Response’s director of policy and communications, Diane Lightfoot, said: “In the run-up to the EU Referendum, our UR consultants created an Easy News Special to enable people with learning disabilities to understand the debate and use their right to vote. In this latest issue of Easy News, our readers can learn about the result of the referendum and other major political and social events which have dominated British newspapers over the last two months.
“We are very proud of our UR consultants’ ongoing work making the news accessible to people with learning disabilities, so that they are not excluded from public debate.”
