British people with learning disabilities stand to miss out on benefits related to transport and leisure when travelling abroad, following the launch of an ‘EU Disability Card’.
The UK is set to exit the European Union (EU) in April next year, with a time-frame for transitioning out still to be agreed.
The EU is already planning for a life without Britain and has launched an equal opportunities card that is to be recognised by participating EU countries only.
The first countries to sign up are: Belgium, Cyprus, Estonia, Finland, Italy, Malta, Slovenia and Romania.
The card does not change national eligibility criteria or rules.
Member states retain their discretion to decide who is eligible to receive the card, using the national definition of disability, and to determine the issuing procedure.
